Christmas: – JESUS or Just Tradition?

Growing up as a PK (if you didn’t know stands for – Pastor’s Kid) my parents allowed us to enjoy certain commercial traditions, such as having a Christmas tree. You just knew that it was Christmas time when my dad would get the tree and decorations out of the garage and we would put the tree up together on 1st December. These were family traditions my siblings and I looked forward to every year.

One thing my parents were very straight with us about was Santa. HE DID NOT EXIST, well not for us anyway. My mum, especially, made it very clear that she went to the shops and brought us the gifts waiting for us under the tree. We were very much aware throughout our childhood that everything we had was because of God and His blessings on our family.

I had to have the SANTA talk with my eldest daughter this week. I have never spoken to my kids about Santa or used him as a way to get my kids to behave, but the struggle is when their friends talk about him at school or nursery and this gets them wondering and starting to ask questions.  I gently advised my daughter that Jesus is why we celebrate Christmas and that God gave Jesus to us and He is the greatest gift ever! So the gifts we have are not from Santa, but that God had blessed us to be able to give to each other (but in the toddler translation lol)

Christmas has got to be one of the most divided holidays within the Christian community.

Should we have a tree?

Should we be spending all our money buying gifts?

Don’t even get me started on the S word (sshhh…Santa)

Some people don’t even celebrate it AT. ALL. PERIOD.

What I love most about Christmas is that so many people are unified, some even coming from across the globe to spend quality time, share delicious food and enjoy endless laughter with each other. Often times, this is one of few occasions whole families actually get together. I for one am proud, that of the birth of my Saviour is still bringing people together thousands of years later.

I’m in no way a political speaker, however I do believe that the hype of proving whether Christmas should or shouldn’t be celebrated is beginning to overshadow the very fact that Jesus Christ was born, and as we would celebrate our own birthdays, I believe that Jesus’ deserves a party too! I won’t go into the ‘He wasn’t born in December’ conversation, seriously. The birth of Jesus Christ will always be a momentous event to us believers and if we want to celebrate it every day or in December, regardless, it should be done. We should be using this opportunity to teach people more about Jesus, rather than spending time condemning those who use their free will to celebrate it.

As a mother, I hope that this Christmas and the many more to come will fulfil for my own children, the abundance of peace in the home, the giving of quality time and the confidence of how much they are truly loved.

I am grateful that because of Jesus’ life, mine and the lives of my loved ones will forever be changed.

Wishing you a very merry Christmas!

“And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for He shall save His people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21 KJV
